TORNI – THE TOWER

Photo and sound landscape collage of the changes in urban space as experienced from Pasila’s cell tower

The idea for the Torni image and sound collage started when I was a deputy city councillor in the Helsinki city council and a member of the city’s equality committee. At that time, I strongly realised how many things should be considered when building, space, light, sustainability of the surrounding urban nature, movement of different people of different ages, and much more.
From Pasila’s cell tower, you could clearly see the gradual but constantly increasing construction of the environment, and the change of the landscape in different seasons of the year. In addition to photography, we also got permission to install pinhole cameras in the tower, pointing at the sun and the landscape.

Solargraphy is the art of long-exposure photography that captures the image of the sun’s path across the sky. The path is invisible to the human eye, and it is also different in each place on Earth.
When you look at the landscape from the tower, you must be very alert; so many things are constantly changing in the events of the earth and sky. The cell phone camera does not lift or magnify, it shows everything roughly as the human eye sees it from the tower.

When you sat in your kitchen having breakfast in the old Pasila, you saw a lot of green, you could follow the events in the yard and the birds playing. Now, in many new houses, the situation is already such that you can see the wall of the neighbouring house very close, and you can observe what the neighbours are spreading on their toast this morning.

In the Torni collage, we have included pictures taken with very different photographic equipment and with equipment of different levels, without fear of jaggedness. One purpose of the work is to encourage people to record their surroundings in pictures, even if they don’t own any luxury equipment. And that’s what many people do nowadays; the digital age makes a lot possible. Someone takes pictures of the forest they know all year round; someone photographs the birdhouse in the yard, someone takes pictures of their every morning swimming spot through summers and winters.

The collage is also the mind’s journey to the landscape. While the camera follows the changing urban space, the soundscapes, solargraphs, and music recorded on the spot create space for the mind to wander.

You can also look at the collage, trying to spot what disappears and what replaces it.

Clothes of Strangers, Faces of Others is the second multidisciplinary collaboration for Galerie Toolbox by visual artist Antero Kahila and musician-poet Kirsi Poutanen. In their previous project the couple explored the experience of meaning and its possibility for the contemporary individual. This time their themes are insecurity, disintegration and loneliness. Clothes of Strangers, Faces of Others consists of a two-channel sound installation by Poutanen and thematically linked paintings of clothes and faces by Kahila.

Antero Kahila is an acclaimed and award-winning visual artist and painter from Finland. The recurring thematic focus in his most recent paintings is on humanity and the human condition, which is explored through the depiction of skin, bodies, faces, fabrics, clothes and membranes. These elements tend to appear as interfaces between the identifying subject and the world, between the subject and the other. The space in Kahila’s paintings is often a kind of reduced stage that permits the depiction of the desired function, gesture or act. Humanity as seen in Kahila’s art is often fragile, vulnerable yet tuned to consciousness in a highly distinctive way.

Kirsi Poutanen is an all-round artist and well-known singer, musician and poet based in Finland. She has also featured on stage as an actress, performer and scriptwriter. Poutanen constructed her sound installation by closely attuning her creative work to Kahila’s process of painting. Her installation aims to reflect the thematic world of the paintings while resonating as an independent audio image in the gallery.

Kahila and Poutanen’s Clothes of Strangers, Faces of Others is a complex and multi-sensory project that can be viewed from many perspectives that deals with the topics insecurity, fear of disintegration, and loneliness.

Clothes of Strangers, Faces of Others besteht aus einer 2-Kanal-Soundinstallation von Poutanen und Kahilas thematisch Bezug nehmenden Gemälden von Kleidung und Gesichtern.

Antero Kahila ist ein anerkannter und preisgekrönter bildender Künstler und Maler aus Finnland. Der thematische Schwerpunkt seiner jüngsten Bilder liegt auf dem Menschsein und dem menschlichen Zustand, dem er sich in der Darstellung von Haut, Körpern, Gesichtern, Textilien, Kleidung und Membranen nähert. Diese Elemente fungieren als Schnittstellen zwischen dem identitätsbildenden Subjekt und der Welt, zwischen dem Subjekt und dem Anderen. Der Raum in Kahilas Gemälden ist oft eine Art reduzierter Bühne, die die Abbildung der gewünschten Funktion, Geste oder Handlung erlaubt. Die Menschheit, wie sie in Kahilas Kunst erscheint, ist oft zerbrechlich, verletzlich, dabei aber in einer sehr distinkten Weise auf Bewusstheit ausgerichtet.

Kirsi Poutanen ist eine sehr vielseitige Künstlerin und bekannte Sängerin, Musikerin und Dichterin aus Finnland. Sie hat auch als Schauspielerin und Performerin sowie als Skriptschreiberin für die Bühne gewirkt. Poutanen hat ihre Soundinstallation entwickelt, indem sie ihre kreative Arbeit eng auf Kahilas Malprozess abgestimmt hat. Die Installation spiegelt die thematische Welt der Gemälde wider, während sie auch als eigenständiges Klangbild im Galerieraum zu hören ist.

Kahilas und Poutanens Clothes of Strangers, Faces of Others ist ein komplexes und mit verschiedenen Sinnen zu erfahrendes Projekt, das unter vielen Gesichtspunkten betrachtet werden kann, darunter Unsicherheit, Angst vor dem Ausgeschlossenwerden und Einsamkeit.

Seven Operations for Finding Meaning 2 is a joint project by visual artist and painter Antero Kahila and poet-musician Kirsi Poutanen. An impulse for the project was given by the poem Das Kind ist erstaunlich by Poutanen (from the book of poems Villonin puutarha, Helsinki: Tammi 2014).This multidisciplinary joint installation consists of three independent components and is a result of a chain reaction: first there was a poem that inspired a painting, which in turn inspired the audio piece heard in the gallery.

A large painting by Antero Kahila in the gallery is accompanied by Poutanen’s sound installation, which exposes the surface to the senses, to exploration and auditory probing, to an attempt at uncovering the existence of something that evades conscious perception in the events and situations shown on the surface of the painting.
Maybe that ‘something’, let us call it variable x, has been waiting for exactly this moment, the very moment of the birth of this work of art, in order to be encountered as ‘otherness’.

Antero Kahila is a Finnish visual artist and a painter. In his latest series of work Kahila has dealed with alienation and withdrawal. His art explores the boundaries of human understanding and seeks answers to impossible questions. It explores the being of the world in us; Where does the self end and the world begin? Where and what are the beginning and end of a subject that one seeks to understand? This is Kahila’s second exhibition in Toolbox. During the last few years he has made several co-operation projects with poet-musician and actress Kirsi Poutanen. Poutanen is a well-known singer and musician in Finland, especially for her skills in Portuguese fado music. She has released a number books of poems and also been seen on theatre stages as an actress, performer and as a scriptwriter.

Sieben Maßnahmen zur Bedeutungsfindung 2 ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt des Malers Antero Kahila und der Dichterin und Musikerin Kirsi Poutanen. Den Anstoß für das Projekt gab Poutanens Gedicht Das Kind ist erstaunlich (aus dem Gedichtband Villonin puutarha, Helsinki: Tammi 2014). Die multidisziplinäre Installation besteht aus drei verschiedenen Elementen und ist das Ergebnis einer Kettenreaktion: erst war das Gedicht, das das Gemälde inspirierte, das wiederum den Impuls für das Soundpiece gab.

Im Galerieraum ist zu einem großen Gemälde von Antero Kahila das Klangstück von Putanen zu hören, das die Oberfläche des Gemäldes der Sinnenwahrnehmung öffnet, der Erkundung und dem hörenden Tasten – dem Versuch, die Anwesenheit von etwas zu erspüren, das sich bewusster Wahrnehmung entzieht. Vielleicht hat dieses „Etwas“, man könnte es Variable x nennen, genau auf diesen Augenblick gewartet, auf genau diesen Initialmoment des Kunstwerks, um als „Anderes“ erfahren zu werden.

Der finnische Maler Antero Kahila beschäftigt sich in seiner jüngsten Werkserie mit den Themen Entfremdung und Rückzug. Er lotet die Grenzen menschlicher Verstehensfähigkeit aus und sucht Antworten auf unmögliche Fragen. Seine Arbeiten erkunden die Welt in uns: Wo hört das Selbst auf und wo beginnt die Welt? Wo und was sind Anfang und Ende des Subjekts, das man zu verstehen versucht?
Sieben Maßnahmen zur Bedeutungsfindung 2 ist Kahilas zweite Ausstellung im Projektraum Toolbox.
In den letzten Jahren haben Kahila und Poutanen einige gemeinsame Projekte entwickelt. Kirsi Poutanen ist in Finnland besonders als hervorragende Fado-Sängerin bekannt, darüber hinaus hat sie einige Gedichtbände veröffentlicht, ist als Schauspielerin und Performance-Künstlerin auf Theaterbühnen aufgetreten und hat Drehbücher geschrieben.

Soundscapes & Soundportraits lädt ein zu einem ungewöhnlichen Experiment:

Composer-Performer Harri Sjöström improvisiert frei zur selbstkomponierenden Musikmaschine des Künstlers Frank Rossi. Zuhörer*innen – und hier: der Saxofonist – können interaktiv die Dichte und Geschwindigkeit der Klänge selbst steuern. Nähert man sich dem Apparat oder läuft um ihn herum, wird das Spiel schneller und komplexer, entfernt man sich, wird es leiser und langsamer. Das Konzert findet im Rahmen der Ausstellung von Alexander Horn (Mannheim) und Frank Rossi (Mannheim) im Projektraum Toolbox statt. Die Musikmaschine des Künstlers Frank Rossi erzeugt Klänge, die sich wirklich wie ernstzunehmendes Klavierspiel anhören, und darüber hinaus ist sie auch noch ein wunderschönes Objekt.

Harri Sjöström gehört zu den herausragendsten Composer-Performern weltweit. Sein Spiel enthält sowohl aktuelle, zeitgenössische Arten und Weisen der Klangerzeugung als auch melodiös-lyrische Elemente, vielleicht inspiriert von Vogelsang. Er verwendet verschiedene Dämpfer (selected mutes), teils zweckentfremdete Gegenstände, wie etwa den inzwischen berühmten Plastikbecher, die es ihm erlauben, in einen Dialog mit sich selbst zu treten. Die tiefen Töne klingen durch den Dämpfer wie eine Trompete, das ist die eine Stimme des Dialogs, die andere sind die höheren mit dem normalen Saxofon-Sound.

The Black Hunter

The work of Alexander Horn is known for its drifting along at the limits of what seems to be speakable, or, as one of the titles says: ‘Administrations and measures at the border of unlikeliness’.
Horn’s pictures, mostly begun as drawings and structured through limited imagery, are completed by diverse mixed media.
These drawings combine concise composition, overpainting and collagelike elements into a peculiar pictorial language which, despite its archaic impression of rigidity, hints at something detached and moving.

Die Arbeiten Alexander Horns zeichnen sich oft, im Wortsinne, dadurch aus, dass sie an den
Grenzen des Sagbaren entlanggleiten, oder „Anwendungen und Maßnahmen an der Schnittstelle zur Unwahrscheinlichkeit“ sind – wie einer der Titel lautet.
In den motivisch sehr eng gefassten und meist als Zeichnungen angelegten, dann in verschiedenen Mischtechniken fortgeführten Grafiken vermengen sich strenge Formgebung, Übermalungen sowie collagehafte Elemente zu einer eigentümlichen Bildsprache, welche trotz ihrer archaisch anmutenden Statik etwas Losgelöstes und Bewegendes in sich birgt.

“Mother’s Nerves is a story told by a mother whose son is planning a suicide. The son
is struggling with the question of justification: why is he there to survive while the
other people should die. Who should die after all? The politically incorrect wish of a
destruction can be discussed from a child’s point of view, from its safe harbor. The
story is based on my own early childhood memory, a remark that I made in the
age of 5. I couldn’t understand why there was simultaneously a discussion about
overpopulation and grief for 100 people dying in an airplane accident. The point,
obviously, was that there should be less people and making people less should be
started from somewhere. Fair, until the roulette chooses someone you love.”

Arja Kärkkäinen is a Helsinki based installation artist who mainly works with video and
spatial installation. Kärkkäinen in her MA studies in the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki.

“The piece will reflect aural and electrical happenings/non-happenings of the space. It aims to fixedly resonate and follow the very present – the ‘NOW’ moment. The outcome can be meditative and/or disorientating, but always mind manifesting.”

Mika Hyytiä is an underground sound artist – musician from Helsinki. Hyytiä’s main instrument is modular synthesizer and over the past 5 years, he has focused on improvisation-based performances around Finland in clubs, art galleries, and festivals. Hyytiä has released limited editions of cassettes and also recordings and releases in collaboration with several artists of highly variant outputs/approaches.
